1-D is learning all about fractions! We started our conversation by reading a great book which talked about sharing a pizza and other items to make it fair. We are now working on our own book about fractions and showing a fraction by coloring in part of a shape. We are impressed with the way 1-D is thinking about fractions!
Forty years ago, a collection of "hidden soldiers" was discovered by farmers in China while they were digging a well. The first emperor of China had these soldiers made out of clay to protect his tomb after he died. There are believed to be over 8,000 soldiers and each soldier is unique. 1-D did a wonderful job creating our own Terracota Soldiers, all unique as well!
We built our own Great Wall of China! We started in 5 different places in the room with different materials and had to make the wall connect in 20 minutes. Great teamwork 1-D!
We learned about China's Forbidden City. In 1407, the emperor of China made his own city right in the middle of Beijing. He built it to protect himself and his family from enemies. We learned all about the city, saw images of the different buildings, and then made our own Forbidden City!
After reading the book, Martin's Big Words, we made collages of all the important words and ideas Dr. Martin Luther King stood for. We are proud of the way 1-D listened to his words and created an image of what these important words meant to them. After reading Martin's Big Words by Doreen Rappaport, we made a ripped paper collage to decorate important words we heard in the story. Freedom, courage, love, together, dream, peace, and march were some of our favorites!
We learned an awesome song to help us learn doubles facts. Then, we illustrated each line!
If you would like to see the video, click here. We read Peter's Chair and then collaged just like Ezra Jack Keats. We also thought about the lesson Peter learned in the story. We hope you enjoy our artwork!
We started hearing from our spectacular 1-D students about their favorite things. Great first sharing, first graders!
